A 20 minute workout that the Victoria’s Secret Angels swear by for a runway ready body is launching across Australia this month and it promises to burn 500 calories (2,000 kilojoules) a session.
20PerFit, a ‘gym-like’ franchise in Sydney and soon-to-be Melbourne, is bringing an electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) exercise routine Down Under after it became the go-to fat burning method for models and athletes alike.
You can currently try it out at their Parramatta campus for $85 per single class or $45 if you’re happy to work in a group class.
The Melbourne studio will open on September 11 and a further Sydney store is opening on the 19th.

Personal trainers give their clients a wireless full body suit to wear during the duration of their training and it sparks an electrical current that triggers 150 times more muscle contractions than a conventional workout would.
‘The average person uses around 30 per cent of muscle fibres during a regular workout, while top athletes use up to 70 per cent of their muscle fibres,’ the website read.
‘During a full body EMS workout, up to 90 per cent of your muscles are activated, making your workouts more intense and delivering more results in just 20 minutes.’
It’s the equivalent of doing a 90 minute HIIT session at the gym, experts suggest.

What is EMS training?
Electrical Muscular Stimulation (EMS) uses your own electrical pulses to contract your muscles without you having to put strain on your joints or ligaments to do the work.
EMS uses an electric current to fire muscle fibres to give your body an intense and effective athletic training session. EMS training is appropriate for all levels including; general population, athletes, beginner, in rehabilitation or someone looking for a unique kick in their workout.

Most of the workout involves simple movements like lunges, planks, squats and butterfly kicks to target the abs so anyone can give it a try.
One such session might include bicep curls, squat pulses, box jumps and crunches.
In the United States EMS specialist Mohamed Elzomor trains Victoria’s Secret Angels Romee Strijd, Elsa Hosk, Alessandria Ambrosio and Heidi Klum using the special wetsuit-like outfit.
In his studio Core Club the ladies have wires attached to the suit that hook up to a machine, so he can control the power throughout the workout and vary it depending on which area they want to target more of.

20PerFit’s EMS machines, which are being shipped from Germany, are completely wireless so you can do more varied movements without fear of getting tangled.
A single class costs between $75-$85 for one-on-one training or you can workout in a group dynamic for $45-$55.

What are the rules around EMS?
1. It’s recommended you drink at least half a litre of water 30 minutes before your workout to help your muscles recover post-workout.
2. Before your 20PerFit training session, it’s recommended you eat a carb-rich snack or small meal to give you enough energy to get the most out of your workout. After your session, make sure you eat foods rich in protein, potassium and magnesium. This will help your muscles recover, and will also reduce any muscle soreness after your EMS session.
3. Between each EMS session, it’s advised that you take a two- to three-day break so your muscles can rest and recover. By taking a break, you’ll allow your muscles to repair and grow, which will ensure you get the maximum benefit from your training.
