Mother of one discovers the secret message her terminally ill mum left on her wedding shoes

A mother of one has revealed how she was left ‘in bits’ after uncovering a secret message her own mum left her on her wedding shoes before she died.

Emma Letts, 34, from Leicestershire, discovered the message when she collected her wedding shoes last week.

Her mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in December 2016, shortly after Emma got engaged, and died in 2017.

But when Emma went to collect the shoes, she found the surprise message from her mother.

On the sole of the shoes, her mother had organised a secret note, which read: ‘Wanted you to have a gift from me on your wedding day. Your wedding shoes are my gift to you.

‘Hope you have a magical day. Lots and lots of love and big hugs, MUM xxxx’

Emma and her future husband Richard got engaged in December 2016, and shortly afterwards her mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

She was given one or two years to live, and the couple planned their wedding for August 2019, with the hope that her mother could be there.

Emma’s mum was able to visit the wedding venue, but tragically died in 2017 leaving Emma to do much of the wedding planning without her mum.

Last week when the bespoke shoes were delivered to Emma, she was overwhelmed to find the secret message.

Emma, who admitted the wedding had been hard to plan without her mum, told the BBC there had been lots of tears.

She said she had no idea that her mother had organised the message, although her fiance was in on the secret.

She said she was overwhelmed by the shoes, which were her first purchase for the wedding, and said: ‘I started to cry… I was just absolutely in bits. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk.’

Amanda Weise, from Barrow upon Soar, runs the online shop Lace and Love, and customised the shoes, calling them the most emotional shoes she’d ever made.

She revealed that Emma’s mum had been in touch weeks after the order was placed in January 2017, and asked for the custom message to be added to the soles of the shoes.

Amanda also revealed that Emma’s mum brought the shoes as a wedding gift for her daughter, and asked her to refund Emma the initial deposit added.

Calling them ‘the most emotional shoes she’d ever made, she said: ‘Hopefully it will give her a bit of comfort on the day. It will be like walking down the aisle with her mum.’

Sharing the post on Facebook, Emma called the pumps her ‘dream shoes’, saying: ‘I received my beautiful shoes yesterday and I can not stop looking at them… WOW! I am totally in love!’

She went on to praise the local shoe shop who had created the beautiful pink pump, writing: ‘Amanda is super talented and has such a amazing eye for detail. The shoes are so personal and bespoke.’

Emma also revealed she had received lots of messages of support sharing her story, and said it was nice to know there were others who had gone through planning a wedding without their mum there.
